Hope is located at the junction of US Highway 60 and State Highway 72, approximately 48 miles east of the California border and 7 miles west of Salome.
In 1909, the Arizona Gazette noted that under the name of Johannesberg, a new town had sprung into existence at this location. It was short-lived. In 1920, the main highway changed its route from Vicksburg to bypass the location of old Johannesberg.
Merchants moved from Vicksburg to the new location and named it “Hope” to reflect their own wishes for renewed business. In the 1930’s, the owner of Hope was Hope Survant. This might be another explanation for the town’s name. |
